Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, Luzon, Philippines

A visit to the Philippines is a visit to many of its amazing beaches, whether you head north or south or whether your plan is to go somewhere else; all roads lead to the beach.

Think of it this way- if the Southern region has the popular Boracay, the Northern region has the low-key yet awesome Pagudpud.

Located at the northern most tip of the Luzon Island and facing the West Philippine sea, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte is a coastal town with stretch of white sand beach and emerald waters, with Saud White Beach as the go-to destination.

More than the palm tree lined beach, a few minutes motorcycle ride away are other worthy destinations to visit around the municipality. Some of these destinations has been the highlight of my trip.

Thirty minutes trek passing by rice paddies, forests and thousand year old tree, the 80-feet tall Kabigan Falls at Barangay Balaoi is an enchanting place to experience, nature in all its glory.

A small fee (~ 3 USD) for a local tour guide is mandatory when visiting Kabigan Falls. The fee is a source of income for the local guides and in a way used for keeping the place tidy, so don’t begrudge the idea of paying to see the waterfalls.

Connecting the two neighborhoods of Balaoi and Pancian is the 1.2km long Winding Patapat Bridge, a bridge located at the foot of the cliff of the mountain. A major highway of sort, the winding road is empty most of the time, making it a popular photo stopover.

A “mountain with a hole”, the Bantay Abot Caves, adjacent to the sea is a unique formation where waves splash into its walls just like the adjacent lucid open shore of shells and rocks.

The impression from a distant is that the hole in a cave is small, but standing inside the walls of Bantay Abot Caves prove to be otherwise.

Not yet overrun by tourists and big hotel chains, Pagudpud is a cheaper alternative to other resort town destination and good choice for those looking for more than beach time.
