Streets of Amsterdam, The Netherlands

What is it with Amsterdam that makes you feel like you can be careless for a day and just live for the moment?

Is it the wonderful smell in one corner? The coffeshops to get high? The young and the restless roaming the streets?

I disagree in thinking that the vibe has everything to do with the famous coffeshops or even the brown café’ (bruin café).

Maybe it is the century old buildings, the bicycles and the canals but what makes it special are every small details that formed this wonderful city.

To begin with, Amsterdam does not make you feel like you are in a city. The lack of towering modern buildings is one of the things that makes the huge difference.

Starting for Amsterdam Centraal Station to Rembrandt House Museum (Museum Het Rembrandthuis) and Museumplein, these old buildings or reconstructions of the originals, with their colorful small windows and gabled facade provided that cozy environment.

Then there are the kings of the road- nope, certainly not talking about trucks or jeeps, instead you have a network of trams sharing the very crowded streets with cyclist and pedestrians.

To top it all, the city has some of the best museums in the world. I don’t mind waiting in line for an hour to go inside Anne Frank House (Anne Frank Huis) for the lessons gained was all worth it.

When things becomes tiring, there is always a free bench at Vondelpark to rest. Seeing how beautiful the park is, I can’t imagine that at some point in the past decades the park operated on a mantra that “everything is possible and (almost) everything is allowed”.

Finally, Amsterdaamers are some of the nicest people in the world. I feel welcome in Amsterdam the minute I stepped out of the train station.

Of course I am not an expert on the subject of Amsterdam and these are just my personal observations. If you been to this city, I’m pretty sure you know exactly all the reasons why Amsterdam is one of a kind.

  1. I believe everyone should visit at least one different country. My husband and I went to Germany a few years back, Ireland this past October. I feel more complete from my travels, a greater connective ness with all because of it.

    1. Me too… i feel most alive is when i’m in a new country or new city and everything feel strange, exciting and scary at the same time 🙂

  2. I think perhaps it’s the people that give Amsterdam her unique flavor and spice. They are the down to earth people of this world. Much like the ones you find in Colorado and Oregeon. They would rather ride a bike then take a car, appreciate their parks and love their own pace. And I mean I can dig on that.

    1. I visited during autumn so i guess that’s the best time 🙂 not too cold and hostels tends to be cheaper.
